Volume 31 | Paper Sustainability

We’re all used to hearing the term “go green”. It goes without saying that everyone wants what’s best for the environment, but did you know that moving away from sustainable printing to an increasingly digital marketplace is not necessarily the best avenue in reversing damage to our planet? Below are some facts to consider.

A Growing Concern

44.7 million metric tons of electronic waste are generated globally each year and e-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world. In the United States, only approximately 22% of e-waste is collected.

There is an estimated 2 billion smartphones, 1 billion computers, and 5 – 7 billion other connected devices worldwide. To manufacture a computer, it requires 240 kg of fossil fuels, 22 kg of chemicals, 1.5 tons of water plus numerous precious or rare earth minerals.

A Justifiable Resource

Paper is made with a high percentage of renewable energy. It is recycled more than any other material in North America and can be recycled up to 7 times before the wood fibers break down.

Over the last 6 decades, the net volume of trees on timberland has increased by 58%.

Private landowner’s, who provide 89% of pulpwood for paper-making, are encouraged to maintain, sustainably manage and renew these resources when there’s a steady stream of income coming from paper products.

“The reality is that the greatest incentive for continued investment and retention of our nation’s forests is a stable market for paper and other wood products.”
